As I posted yesterday, I wrote letters to the Premier, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, as well as the Minister of Education. Two letters were sent to the Premier and the Minister of Education, discussing the book ban. Three letters with varying wording were sent to the Premier, Minister of Education, and Minister of Mental Health and Addictions discussing the CALM curriculum in Alberta.
There is a growing push in Alberta and across North America to restrict access to books in public school systems that include themes of sexuality, trauma, mental health, or identity—particularly 2SLGBTQ+ and racialized perspectives. The justification is often that this material is “explicit” or “inappropriate for children.”
